Cyanotype Workshop at Montsalvat, Eltham; with Photographer, Aldona Kmiec

WHY TRY A CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP?

I recently took part in a Cyanotype Workshop at Montsalvat, and it was an enriching experience. There was something grounding about working with one of the earliest photographic processes, slowing down, embracing the tactile nature of coating paper, placing objects, and letting sunlight do the work. I was amazed that just by a chemical solution and sun, you could create an actual image.

This workshop gave me the opportunity to experiment and create new pieces for my current project I’m working on, even here and there. And by exploring this way of creating an image, allowed me to approach my work from a different perspective, and the unpredictability of the process brought an openness that I valued. The deep blues and subtle variations of what light can do, were both interesting and exciting!

Aldona, who lead us through this workshop was incredibly generous and warm throughout the three hours; she was supportive of experimentation and individual direction, which I appreciated. I definitely recommend attending one of her workshops, it’s a beautiful opportunity to learn something historic, create, and to make images without using a digital camera.
